Liz Webler Rowell

Senior Consultant and Writer

“Much like foreign countries, benefits programs have their own vocabulary. Employees only have time to take short trips to benefits-land. Instead of making them learn a new language, I think good communication can translate it.”

Liz Webler Rowell is a believer in many things, but above all, she believes in the power of self care. She knows from personal experience that when people feel great about their health, they do great work as a result.

In work and in life, Liz has always found herself drawn to making things better—from persuading low-income families to make room for health insurance in their budget, to re-reading materials with a fresh eye just before they go to press, to scouring flea markets for pieces to help restore an 1880s clapboard Victorian.

When Liz consults, she delves deep into employees’ lives, then translates the language of health care communication into messages employees really care about—through words, images, creative use of media, and interactive experience. A veritable almanac of health care projects and their results, Liz is the one we turn to for the latest and greatest benefits case studies. She’s unabashedly passionate about such topics as the “effective use of resources,” and believes the most effective use of her resources is finding ways companies can make the biggest difference for their employees.

Liz joined Benz Communications after spending eight years at Hewitt Associates, where her work received an IABC award along with numerous other internal commendations. A Chicago native who now lives 30 miles from where she grew up, Liz has lived in Tanzania, Ireland, Massachusetts, Maine, and New York—all while finding time to practice Kundalini yoga daily for the past 12 years. She has a BA in English and African Studies from Smith College, a BA in African Studies from the University of Dar es Salaam, an MFA in Writing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a weakness for chocolate croissants from the Vietnamese bakery near her house.
